Dr. Chris Ellis Leads his Students to Visualize Climate Change Solutions at Point Lookout State Park, Using Virtual Reality

October 17, 2025

Led by Professor Chris Ellis and supported by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the landscape architecture students at the University of Maryland have created immersive virtual reality experiences to visualize the impact of climate change at Point Lookout State Park. The project uses sensory cues like the tolling of a bell to mark each passing decade to show rising sea levels and environmental transformation. Students proposed adaptive designs such as raised walkways, floating wetlands, and living shorelines to keep the park accessible and resilient. The VR projects are available to view on Meta Quest TV, offering a powerful tool for public engagement and future planning.
