Charles Birnbaum delivering his lecture to an intrigued audience
This past Thursday, January 31st, the University of Maryland and Maryland ASLA were delighted to host Charles Birnbaum, Founder and CEO of the Cultural Landscapes Foundation, to deliver a lecture talk. The event was part of the Victor Stanley Lecture Series. Students and staff alike were excited to hear Charles speak on cultural landscapes. Charles challenged his listeners to consider what is the cultural value of landscape architecture, architecture, and art. This kind of perspective pushes our understanding of landscapes--how they are received by people and what different effects they have--to new lengths. During his lecture, Charles touched on the concept of continuity in design. Following the lecture, all were welcome to join for a reception sponsored by Victor Stanley. The quiet room soon became noisy with chatter and discussion. Food was catered and everyone, especially students, left with grateful hearts and full stomachs! This event was yet another successful time for the Victor Stanley Lecture Series and for the landscape architecture community here at the University of Maryland.
